Frequently Asked Questions

Does nutrition therapy work for most GI conditions?

Nutritional therapy can be used to treat GI conditions such as IBS, IBD, GERD (heartburn), constipation, and diarrhea. If there is an infection, however, it may call for more testing to be done in order to determine if antibiotics or herbal antibiotics are needed.

Will you help me lose weight?

My practice does not focus on weight loss, however weight gain is often a symptom of something else going on in the body. Weight loss is often a “side effect” of improving overall health.

Will you work with my doctor/counselor/social worker/psychologist/psychiatrist?

Yes! I am happy to coordinate care with other practitioners, if you give me permission.

How do you figure out my nutritional needs?

I will perform a nutrition-based physical exam that can tell me a lot about your needs. We will look at bloodwork and/or lab tests that can also shed light on your nutritional needs. Together we will look at your eating habits, current stress level, and exercise, all of which have a large impact on your nutritional status.

Can improving my nutritional status help with my mental health?

The relationship between the health of our gut and mind is referred to as the gut-brain axis. Both GI conditions and autoimmune conditions, such as Hashimoto’s, often are linked to mental health issues where there can be increased anxiety or depression. This is because neurotransmitters such as serotonin are actually created in the gut and needed for healthy brain function.

How long should I plan on seeing you?

This entirely depends on your needs. Usually it takes between 6-12 appointments for significant and lasting changes to be made. Some clients, especially those dealing with challenging medical conditions, may need more.

Can I use your services if I live out of state?

Yes, Katherine can consult with you via secure teleconferencing or over the phone.

Are you LGTBQ+ Friendly?

Yes! You are welcome in my practice. I'd love to work with you and don't make assumptions about your gender, that of your partner(s), etc.

Can I schedule an appointment for my child?

Yes! Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Consultations can take place via teleconference or in person.

Do you take insurance?

I do not take insurance at this time, however, I can provide a receipt (superbill) for you that you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.

This works best for people who have already met their deductible or their insurance allows out-of-network billing.
